The 3S-FSE was a direct injection engine with Toyota D4 system. A cam driven high pressure fuel pump is at the #4 end of the head. The 1AZ-FSE engine has slant-squish combustion chambers, offset cylinder and crank centers, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) for the intake side and Toyota’s D-4 direct injection system. An 86.0 mm (3.39 in) cylinder bore and 86.0 mm (3.39 in) piston stroke give the motor a total of 1,998 cc (121.93 cu-in) of displacement.

Toyota 1AZ-FE/FSE engine reliability, problems and repair
In 2000, the legendary Toyota 3S engine’s successor, i.e. a 2 liter 1AZ, came out into a world market. The motor was denied in using a cast iron block of cylinders, so they replaced it with a light aluminium block having cast iron sleeves. For weakening tension on the sleeves, the axle of the cylinder was displaced against the axis of the crankshaft. The crankshaft itself is new. 1AZ has got new pistons, connecting rods and others.
The aluminium cylinder head is fitted with a VVTi variable valve timing system located on the inlet camshaft. The 1AZ-FSE modification has got a direct injection system, too. An electronic throttle body and other parts are also applied. The 1AZ engine isn’t equipped with hydraulic lifters, so you will need to adjust the valves time after time on your own. There are such clearances as: inlet 0.19 – 0.29 mm clearances and outlet 0.30 – 0.40 mm clearances.
The timing chain is used in the 1AZ. Its lifespan is 120,000 miles (200,000 km) of mileage. Having run that distance, it will be necessary to replace the timing chain.
A 2.4-liter 2AZ engine was designed out of the given engine.
In 2007 new Toyota ZR motors were introduced, and the 3ZR modification started to replace the 1AZ little-by-little.

Toyota 1AZ engine modifications and differences
1. The 1AZ-FE modification (2000 – present) is a basic motor; its compression ratio is 9.6 and 9.8. First version: its capacity is 145 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and torque is 190 Nm (140 lb•ft) at 4,000 rpm. Second version: Its power is 150 HP at 6,000 rpm with a torque of 193 Nm (142 lb•ft) at 4,000 rpm.
2. The 1AZ-FSE (D4) modification (2000 – present) resembles the 1AZ-FE engine with a direct injection system. Its compression ratio varies from 9.8, 10.5 and 11, depending on a type of modification. The engine’s power varies from 150 HP to 155 HP.
Toyota 1AZ engine problems and malfunctions
1. Thread stripping inside the block cylinder. That is the main problem for all the AZs. The common signs of the trouble include coolant on the cylinder block back wall and engine overheat. Further, you can face a loss of shape. Finally, you will need to purchase a new cylinder block. To solve that problem, you should renovate the thread or buy a 1AZ block of cylinders produced after 2007. That usually helps to eliminate the trouble.
2. Engine vibration at idle. You can feel that, if any, when engine rpms decrease to 500-600 rpm. That is typical of the engine and preventing the sort of problem can become quite a challenge. You should clean the idle control valve, throttle body, fuel injectors and inspect all the engine mounts. Doing that, you will be able to decrease vibrations and you won’t overcome the hurdle completely.
3. Jerks at accelerating. Clean the throttle body and remove soot out of the intake manifold. That must help. The 1AZ is susceptible to soot formation. If there is any faultiness left, then you should inspect the VVTi and oxygen sensor.
Besides, the models designed for a Japanese market are equipped with a EGR system and have a problem associated with soot formation resulting in unsteady idle run and power decrease. To solve that, you need to cleanse the EGR valve or block it. The 1AZ’s overheat threatens with a loss of the cylinder block’s shape and spoiling it. FSE (D4) modifications greatly depend on fuel quality. If you keep refuelling your engine with a low-quality petrol, your high pressure fuel pump and injectors will be disarranged, and they are quite costly. The timing chain is normal, cannot be strained and not that troublesome. The cylinder block is irreparable, but engine life is quite high: it reaches 200,000 miles (300,000 km) of mileage.
In general, if the 1AZ type of motor is good and thoroughly maintained, it will serve you long and won’t give you much trouble.

1AZ-FE/FSE Supercharger
Toyota D4 Engine Problem
There are some supercharger kits, which are specially designed for AZ, Blitz and TRD –engines. All you have to do is to buy that sort of kit and bolt it on the stock internals. Before doing that, you had better either remove the catalytic converter or purchase a cat-back exhaust system. For setting, you must buy a Greddy e-Manage Ultimate. As a result, you will get 200 horsepower on the stock pistons. It is not reasonable to take additional steps on devising something more powerful. It would be easier to acquire Toyota with 1JZ or 2JZ engines.
